Gellifaelog Primary School

Together we

Our Value of the Month is:

‘Nurturing School’

At Gellifaelog Primary School, we are working towards becoming a ‘nurturing school’ as we believe it is important to ensure our pupils are in a nurturing environment that supports them to learn. Nurture helps us to develop our social and emotional skills to support our development as well as to develop our resilience.

There are ‘Six Principles of Nurture’ which we want to embed throughout our school and school community.  Over the next six weeks, we will be introducing a ‘Nurture Principle of the Week’ along with some activities

Our ‘Nurture Principle’ 1 is: Children’s learning is understood developmentally “We all learn in different ways and in our own time.”

Our ‘Nurture Principle’ 2 is: The Classroom Offers a Safe Base “The Classroom is a Safe Place”

Our ‘Nurture Principle’ 3 is: The Importance of Nurture to the Development of Well-being “Nurture helps us feel good in our mind and body.”

Our ‘Nurture Principle 4’ is: Language is a vital means of communication

“The way we speak and the words we use are important.”

Our ‘Nurture Principle 5’ is: All Behaviour is Communication

“How we behave tells you how we feel.

Our ‘Nurture Principle 6'is: The importance of transition in children’s lives “Everyone faces change and Nurture can help”

At Gellifaelog we know that children learn in different ways and in their own time. We meet children where they are in their learning and provide challenges and scaffolds.

This week, during our well-being sessions, we will be encouraging children to think about how they learn. They will engage in activities such as:

  •  Talking to a friend about their favourite thing to learn/favourite subject or activity and why they enjoy it.
  • Creating a poster about all  of the things they like to learn and the ways they like to learn (eg listening to someone, playing games, role-play, reading, watching something, talking to someone etc).
  • Understanding that everybody likes to learn different things and has different hobbies.
  • Listening to others sharing their favourite things to do and learn.

What you can do at home

  •  Encourage your child to teach a family member something they have learnt in school, can you teach them in different ways? E.g. by showing and telling, playing a game, drawing a picture.
  • Ask your child to draw a picture of something they have learnt in the past week - in school, home or any extra-curricular activities.

*Any activities you complete at home, please share photographs with your child’s teacher on Seesaw or Google Classroom.*
